About us

Welcome to the small web site of the Russian Orthodox Parish of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk (sometimes spelled ‘St. Tichon’), located in San Francisco. This web site is meant primarily to convey essential materials about the parish: where to find us, the dates and times of our principal divine services, and other activities of the parish.   Our parish worships in both Church Slavonic and English, with clergy and parishioners speaking both English and Russian.

The original orphanage of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk was founded in Shanghai, China in 1935 by St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco. The orphans were forced to relocate to a refugee camp on the Philippine Island of Tubabao in 1948 due to the rise of the Communist Party in China.  After more than  two years in the camp on Tubabao, 26 orphans arrived at their new home in 1951 on the corner of 15th Avenue and Balboa in San Francisco, California in the United States.  With the assistance of the Aid Committee for the Orphanage of St Tikhon of Zadonsk, which was formed while the orphans were still in the Philippines, St. John himself chose and acquired the house that became the new orphanage and present church of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk.
